Rebecca Autry, a Pharmacist Coordinator at UNC Health Rockingham Pharmacy, was honored with the BEE Award for Extraordinary Patient Care. Autry has been working in the pharmacy for nearly 20 years and says that UNC Health Rockingham is her “home away from home.”
She was nominated by her supervisor for her selfless act of compassionate patient care. There was a patient who had been in the hospital for several months. During rounds a discussion was had about getting the patient outside in the fresh air to enjoy change of scenery, but the patient did not have a coat or gloves and it was winter time. Rebecca went out and purchased a coat and gloves, on her own, and had the nurse supervisor give it to the patient. Rebecca’s thoughtfulness and generosity was way outside of her scope of work.
When asked what this award means to her, Autry stated, “I am grateful and appreciative to receive the Bee Award. I saw an opportunity to potentially make a positive impact on a patient's stay here at UNC Health Rockingham, outside of my normal role. It shows that small acts of kindness matter. The BEE Award reiterates that no matter how "little" or "big" our job is, we are all a part of the One Great Team that strives to provide quality and safe care for our patients.”

She is an extremely conscientious pharmacist and always puts the patient first whether it involves choosing the most appropriate drug therapy, patient safety, or as in this situation, helping to make a patient’s hospital stay better.” said Jane Younts, Director of Pharmacy at UNC Health Rockingham. “The hospital and our patients are fortunate to have Rebecca as a part of the patient care team.”
The BEE award is presented throughout the year to honor the extraordinary care provided by non-nursing support staff that go above and beyond to make an impact outside their daily duties. The support of other care providers is the foundation upon which a patient’s healthcare team can maintain phenomenal care and advocacy. Just as the Daisy cannot survive without the Bee, the nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by other healthcare professionals.
