Holden Flynn, a paramedic at UNC Health Rockingham, was recently honored with the BEE Award for Extraordinary Patient Care. Flynn has served as a paramedic for seventeen years, including the past six years at UNC Health Rockingham, where he is known for his dedication, compassion, and positive attitude toward both patients and colleagues.
Flynn earned his associate degree from Forsyth Technical Community College and later completed his bachelor’s degree at Western Carolina University. In addition to his patient care responsibilities, he is actively involved in staff education, currently teaching an EKG Basics course for UNC Health Rockingham employees through the hospital's training department.
Flynn was nominated by a coworker for his exceptional attentiveness and advocacy during patient transport. After noticing a sudden change in the patient's mental status, he quickly alerted staff, helped facilitate a rapid response, and ensured the patient received immediate re-evaluation and diagnostic testing. His persistence and commitment to patient safety exemplified the compassionate, proactive care that the BEE Award recognizes.
When asked what receiving the award means to him, Flynn shared, "Receiving the BEE Award was an honor. To me, it means that many of my co-workers recognize the hard work and friendliness I try to show every shift. I'm glad to be doing what I love with people I'm proud to work alongside."
Flynn said the award is especially meaningful because it reflects the support and appreciation of the team he works with every day.
“Holden exemplifies the qualities that make UNC Health Rockingham such a special place to receive care and work,” said Thresa Hardy, Chief Nursing Officer at UNC Health Rockingham. “He is dedicated to providing excellent patient care, supports his teammates in every way possible, and is always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with others. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team.”
The BEE Award is presented throughout the year to honor the extraordinary care provided by non-nursing support staff who go above and beyond to make an impact outside their daily duties. The support of other care providers is the foundation upon which a patient's healthcare team can maintain phenomenal care and advocacy. Just as the Daisy cannot survive without the Bee, nurses cannot thrive without the outstanding teamwork provided by other healthcare professionals.
