Rolonda Hairston, security officer at UNC Health Rockingham, was honored with the BEE award for Extraordinary Patient Care. Hairston was
nominated by a colleague for her outstanding support of a patient experiencing a difficult day. After noticing the patient was anxious following an appointment, Hairston walked with him to the front lobby, stayed by his side, and reassured him until he felt safe and calm. She encouraged him to contact a friend or family member to ensure a safe trip home—an act that exemplifies the extraordinary care the BEE Award celebrates.
Hairston has served with at UNC Health Rockingham for three years and is widely regarded as a leader within the UNC Health Rockingham security team. Alvestus Williams, director of security, praised her dedication, “Rolonda is an exceptional and exemplary teammate. She serves as the lead officer and liaison between myself and UNC Health Rockingham. This award is well deserved as it highlights the care and support Rolonda provides for our teammates and patients each day.”
Reflecting on the honor Hairston said, “Receiving the BEE Award makes me feel seen. As a security officer, it’s easy to feel invisible or perceived as uncaring because our role is to protect. What many don’t realize is that I care deeply about our patients and teammates—more than they will ever know.”
Hairston celebrated this achievement surrounded by hospital senior leadership, her son, and colleagues from across UNC Health Rockingham.
Her commitment to patient well-being and team support is deeply appreciated throughout the hospital and affiliated practices.
The BEE award is presented throughout the year to honor the extraordinary care provided by non-nursing support staff that go above and beyond to make an impact outside their daily duties. The support of other care providers is the foundation upon which a patient’s healthcare team can maintain phenomenal care and advocacy. Just as the Daisy cannot survive without the Bee, the nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by other healthcare professionals.
