UNC Health Rockingham Welcomes
A Special Delivery on Mother’s Day

Early Sunday morning, Katherine Moreno and Emmanuel Deloera welcomed their son at UNC Health Rockingham’s Birthing Center. For second-time mom Katherine, this was a special gift as baby Santi arrived just in time for Mother’s Day. With the help of Dr. Dionne Galloway and the nursing staff in the Birthing Center, she delivered a healthy baby with a full head of dark hair. Katherine shared, “I’m so happy that Leah, Santi’s big sister, visited on Mother’s Day and could hold him.”

While Katherine soothed Santi back to sleep, proud father Emmanuel, described his son’s eventful birth. Taking what he expected to be a short nap after his late-night work shift ended, Emmanuel planned to join Katherine and her parents at UNC Health Rockingham well before delivery. Three hours later, Emmanuel awakened to multiple phone calls and frantic texts telling him to come to the hospital immediately. Before he could get on the road, he received disappointing news. “They told me to slow down and not to rush – our baby was going to be here before I could get there. But I made it, and Santi was born ten minutes later,” said a very relieved Emmanuel.

Vivian Anderson, RN, who has two adult children of her own and was on Katherine’s delivery team, shared how moments like this are treasured by moms who work in labor and delivery on Mother’s Day. “Throughout my career, I have always wanted to be part of a labor and delivery unit. Three years ago, I joined the Birthing Center team at UNC Health Rockingham, and I love being here,” Anderson said. “As a mom, spending Mother’s Day helping another mother welcome her baby into the world…that was incredibly special for me.”

UNC Health Rockingham’s Birthing Center features twelve modern labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum suites and is the only birthing center in the county. The nursing staff, supported by physicians from UNC Women’s Health at Eden, provide a welcoming environment that focuses on family-centered care.
