Lymphedema Therapy

Depend on UNC Health Rockingham's occupational therapists to provide specialized treatment that can ease the swelling and discomfort caused by Lymphedema. You’ll relax in a comfortable, private room while a trained therapist applies light massage to targeted areas. Caught in early stages, treatments can reduce and, in some case, reverse symptoms.

What is Lymphedema?

An abnormal buildup of fluid in the body causes swelling, most often in the arms and legs, but it can occur in the chest, abdomen, face, neck and genitals. It can cause a feeling of heaviness, tightness and limited range of motion. Recurring infections and fibrosis or thickening of the skin can also occur.

Major Causes

  • Surgical procedures, especially for cancer
  • Radiation treatment and certain medications
  • Injuries or traumas to the body
  • Heart or vascular disease, arthritis and eczema
  • Tumors that block the flow of lymphatic fluid
  • Leukemia
  • Occurs at birth in rare cases

Treatments

  • Manual Lymph Drainage – Uses light pressure massage to move trapped fluid toward healthier lymph vessels
  • Compression Bandages or Garments – Promotes lymph drainage through the use of stretch bandages or garments such as sleeves or stockings
  • Sequential Pneumatic Compression – Pumps connected to a garment put intermittent pressure on a swollen limb to move fluid
  • Diet & Exercise Planning – Eating a well-balanced, low-sodium diet can reduce fluid buildup and exercise improves drainage
